Shoes are such a personal thing. What works for one person; a dozen people, quite possible will not for another group. Unfortunately many times the only way you will find if a shoe is right for you is simply to buy it and try it; giving it a fare assessment while you are doing so.
My wife has these shoes. As a matter of fact she owns three pairs - various versions. She loves hers and encouraged me to buy a pair which I finally did. This review is my personal findings and experiences with this shoe, the model shown here. Others will obviously have different findings and observations.
First, this is probably the most comfortable shoe I have ever worn! After following the directions as given each buyer via written information and a CD, I went through the process of getting use to them and allowing my body to adjust to them. I have been suffering (not always in silence, I can assure you) from back pain, hip pain and knee pain. This has all been caused by a misspent youth (over 60 years of it) participating in distance running and obsessive hiking. Be that as it may, within two weeks of wearing this shoe rather constantly, I noted a dramatic decrease in the pain. What a relief! I also noted an improvement in my posture and I like to think I now have an added spring to my step.
Now I have found a few things of note: First, this is NOT a good shoe to workout on a treadmill with, nor is in any good for bike riding. I also found it is not the best shoe to wear over extremely rough terrain. I made a grave error in playing one-on-one basketball with my 20 year old grandsons! You balance is different wearing these things. I walk a minimum of six miles per day during my workout. As long as I stay to relatively smooth surfaces (like on the edge of the highway, sidewalks, etc.) there is no problem. When I take them off road onto trails; rough trails, I find I have a bit of a problem. Please note that these shoes do put a strain on muscle groups in your legs and buttock that are normally not used. If you do any hills of any significant grade, you will feel quite a strain. You have to work up to the big stuff. I also found that going down hills was a bit of a problem until I got very, very use to them. These shoes force a different foot placement and requite a slightly higher foot lift, hell/toe snap, and going down a hill can quite well lead to a stumble and fall until you find your own limitation and stride.
As to the claim of weight loss; I know not what to say. I lost weight but feel it was probably due to a dramatic increase in my exercise time, diet adjustment and weight training. Again, I am not sure because all of our bodies are so different. During this weight loss process (45 pounds...thank you very much), I participated in a lot of cross training and use various other shoes depending upon the activity being participated in.
I wear this particular pair as work shoes. I substitute teach and am on my feet most of the day when I work. am also a risk management consultant for nursing homes and walk literally miles when I am working one of my homes. These shoes have been ideal work shoes in my case and have certainly made my life easier.
Now one of the down sides of this particular model is that it beyond a doubt is the ugliest shoe I have ever had on my feat. The reviewer who called them "Herman Munster Shoes" was being overly kind. These shoes look like clunkers, and indeed, they are quite bulky and quite heavy. This is something that should be considered before purchase. I am personally not all that hung up on achieving "the look" or making any fashion statements at this time in my life. I go for comfort and utility and let others worry about such things. At my age I am allowed.
Despite the ugliness and heaviness though, I liked these shoes so much that I went out and purchased another pair, different model though; one that looks a bit better when I wear shorts.
The cost here on Amazon is quite competitive. I paid about fifteen dollars more at a local retail store for my two pair.
Anyway, that is my experience with these shoes. I have been very impressed. With shoes I hate to recommend that others buy the same thing and spend their good money, only to find that they do not work for them. I can say though that I will continue to wear mine and replace them with the same as needed.
Note: As to the comment about this shoe being the ugliest I have ever owned: When I was much younger I briefly owned and wore a pair of lime-green riding boots. My wife assures me that these boots vie for the honor of being the ugliest. Those boots mysteriously disappeared when I was out of town. I loved those boots.
